How do I know if I need a tooth extraction?

Many patients think they need a tooth pulled because of pain.

Our dentist will evaluate your tooth or teeth to determine whether a dental extraction is the best course for you. Dr. Seth Huish is an expert when it comes to extractions, but also when it comes to saving a damaged tooth. He will make the determination based on your oral health profile and what he discovers upon examination.

In some cases, a tooth has to be extracted to save your other teeth or your overall wellness. Our Salem, OR dentist will make the recommendation and discuss all your options following an examination of the tooth or teeth. You are also encouraged to ask questions and share your concerns with our dentist.

Our gentle dentist understands that you are nervous or anxious about the possibility of losing a tooth, and he will take his time to make sure you understand the process and your options.

What are some of the reasons I might need a tooth extraction?

When we detect oral conditions early, we can often repair a tooth rather than extracting it. This is why maintaining twice-yearly dental appointments and having teeth cleanings every six months is so necessary and strongly recommended by the American Dental Association. At Salem Dental, we find that patients who adhere to these recommendations have a significantly decreased risk for necessary dental extractions.

Decay and periodontal disease are often painless until they are advanced and more challenging to treat, which puts you at risk for a necessary extraction or extractions

Common reasons for an extraction or extractions include:

  • Advanced infection in the tooth or bone—this can compromise your teeth and your systemic health.
  • A split or severely fractured tooth.
  • An unsuccessful root canal treatment.
  • Problematic wisdom teeth—these teeth often encroach on surrounding teeth, come in last, and are not needed.
  • Orthodontic extractions—extractions prior to orthodontic work or to make sure a smaller jaw can accommodate your teeth.
  • A tooth broken at the gumline.
  • Removal prior to dentures or partials.

Often, patients come to us with a painful tooth and request an extraction. We only recommend extractions as a last resort or to resolve an issue. In many cases, root canal therapy, dental crowns, and gum treatments provide a less costly solution. However, the decision to remove a tooth is ultimately yours.

When an extraction is necessary, you can count on our Salem Dental team to ensure the best possible outcome for your health and to make the best recommendations to rebuild your smile.

What is the difference between a simple extraction and a surgical extraction?

Simple extractions are appropriate for teeth that have emerged above the gumline. Simple extractions often heal more quickly and do not usually require stitches.

Surgical extractions are for impacted teeth that cannot erupt entirely, or teeth that grow in at odd angles, pressing on other teeth or roots.

Either way, we will discuss pre- and post-operative instructions to promote a smooth procedure. Our gentle and compassionate dentist performs extractions only when the area is completely numb. Pain-free dentistry in Salem, OR is always our goal!

Are tooth extractions painful?

We think Dr. Seth Huish is the gentlest dentist in Salem, OR. He makes sure you are thoroughly numb before beginning a dental extraction. He offers nitrous oxide, too, if you’re feeling especially anxious.

He also provides at-home instructions or any needed prescriptions to keep you comfortable in the days following your extraction or extractions.

At Salem Dental, our team works hard to make sure you’re well cared for. This includes your comfort before, during, and after dental extractions.

I have had several teeth pulled. What are my tooth-replacement options?

We offer several tooth replacement options in Salem, OR to help you regain your best smile.

Our tooth replacement options include:

  • Dentures—a practical solution.
  • Implant-supported dentures—the best solution for full-tooth loss.
  • Partial dentures for partial tooth loss.
  • Dental implants—the most life-like tooth replacement option in the world.
  • Dental bridges—a suspended restoration tooth anchored to adjacent teeth.

Dr. Seth Huish will evaluate you and go over the best replacement options based on your unique situation and your oral health.

Do I have to have my wisdom teeth pulled?

Having wisdom teeth removed is so common it is practically a rite of passage for teens and young adults. While many people have four wisdom teeth, it is not uncommon for there to be only three, two, or even none present. A full evaluation and x-rays will reveal any problems associated with your wisdom teeth. In most cases, removing them is your best bet to protect the alignment of your bite and your remaining teeth.

Mild bruising and swelling are common after a tooth extraction, and patients can typically find relief with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications with the approval of their doctor.

If your wisdom teeth are not painful, and you opt to keep them, it is essential to give them the extra home care they will require. Because of their location at the very back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are more likely to develop decay or promote gum disease in the surrounding tissue.

At Salem Dental, we accept several popular plans but get in touch with us to learn more. A member of our friendly team will evaluate your insurance plan with you to help you get the most out of your dental benefits.
